1. Do you need support for Assetto Corsa Competizione? Please use the proper forum below and ALWAYS zip and attach the WHOLE "Logs" folder in your c:\users\*youruser*\AppData\Local\AC2\Saved. The "AppData" folder is hidden by default, check "Hidden items" in your Windows view properties. If you report a crash, ALWAYS zip and attach the WHOLE "Crashes" folder in the same directory. Do not post "I have the same issue" in an existing thread with a game crash, always open your own thread. Do not PM developers and staff members for personal troubleshooting and support.
  2. As part of our continuous maintenance and improvements to Assetto Corsa Competizione we will be releasing small updates on a regular basis during the esports season which might not go through the usual announcement process detailing the changes until a later version update where these changes will be listed retrospectively.
  3. If ACC doesn't start with an error or the executable is missing, please add your entire Steam directory to the exceptions in your antivirus software, run a Steam integrity check or reinstall the game altogether. Make sure you add the User/Documents/Assetto Corsa Competizione folder to your antivirus/Defender exceptions and exclude it from any file sharing app (GDrive, OneDrive or Dropbox)! The Corsair iCue software is also known to conflict with Input Device initialization, if the game does not start up and you have such devices, please try disabling the iCue software and try again. [file:unknown] [line: 95] secure crt: invalid error is a sign of antivirus interference, while [Pak chunk signing mismatch on chunk] indicates a corrupted installation that requires game file verification.
  4. When reporting an issue with saved games, please always zip and attach your entire User/Documents/Assetto Corsa Competizione/Savegame folder, along with the logs and the crash folder (when reporting related to a crash).

Generic Weekly Hotlap Challenge #128 – “The forgotten supercar.”

Discussion in 'Console Lounge' started by Totall Wrytoff, May 12, 2019.

  1. Welcome to the thread for the Weekly Hotlap Challenge #128 – “The forgotten supercar” and the Third Round of “Il Campione d'Italia” mini-series.

    The Challenge:
    Hotlap
    Car: Ferrari GTO
    Track: Autodromo del Mugello

Like the 330P4 two weeks ago, I can’t believe we have never used this car in WHC and I’m delighted to be able to propose this juicy combi.
The Ferrari 288 GTO is gorgeous. For me, the shape of the 308/328 is iconic, the classic by Pininfarina and it epitomises Ferrari. The GTO takes that lovely shape, pumps it with muscle, adds two turbos to the V8 and a racing transmission. At its launch in 1984 it was the fastest road car ever made. It is almost too much to contemplate.
Since the early 1980s, Ferrari has produced five distinct supercars. The 288 GTO was the first and the original Ferrari "supercar," designed and built to stand above the regular product line-up. But it has been described as “the forgotten supercar” because of its rarity. With only 272 produced the 288 GTO is the rarest of Ferrari’s super cars. In comparison, there were 1,300 F40s, 400 F50s, approximately 500 Enzos and there are around 600 LaFerraris. In January this year a 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO sold for $3,360,000 at an RM/ Sotheby’s auction in Arizona. So, not too much of a stretch if you’ve splashed out on a Fanatec wheel…

The Ferrari 288 Gran Turismo Omologata was produced between 1984 and 1987 as a race car for the Group B Circuit racing series. The series never happened so all of the 272 cars built stayed as road cars and all came in red, except one, which was black. Oddly, in the game, you have a choice of red or yellow, but not black. The 288 GTO was fitted out for GT road use with leather-trimmed seats, air con and electric windows available as optional extras. The car was very popular with Ferrari customers, which was why they produced and sold 72 cars more than the required homologation amount.
    upload_2019-5-12_21-7-5.png
Reset your wheel angle to “truck position” for authenticity! Intercoolers dominate the view of the engine, with the turbos tucked under the rear anti-roll bar. Lovely.
The 288 GTO weighs 1,159 kg and is powered by a 2.8litre, DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder V8, with IHI twin-turbochargers, Behr air-to-air intercoolers and Weber-Marelli fuel injection. This delivers 395-400bhp at a noisy 7,000rpm and a chunky 366lb/ft (496Nm) of torque, but not until 3,800 rpm. You’ll notice that!

Unlike the 308, the GTO’s V8 was mounted longitudinally, using the 308's rear trunk space to make room for the twin turbochargers and intercoolers. The racing transmission was mounted to the rear of the longitudinal engine, you can see it hanging out over the rear axle.

    L'autodromo del Mugello in Tuscany.
One of the most heavenly places on earth.
    upload_2019-5-12_21-8-34.png
Road racing started here on public streets in the 1920s, the circuit we have was built in 1973. Having done an F1 test at the track, Mark Webber said that "10 dry laps around Mugello is the same as doing 1000 laps around the Abu Dhabi track in terms of satisfaction."
The Mugello Circuit really shows off how well the 288 GTO drives. Down into and up through Arrabbiata is scintillating. Providing you are on boost, the engine feels muscular and you can use the throttle to help steer the car, its great balance and poise made me feel like a much better driver than I am. Don’t drop off boost though!
A big drawback about this week’s combi is that we can’t actually drive our Ferrari into the local town of Scarperia for some Coccoli con prosciutto e Stracchino (google it, but not if you are dieting) and a bottle or three of Brunello di Montalcino as the sun sets over the Tuscan Hills.

The other slight drawback is that, on console versions at least, there is a bug in the transmission set-up. If you select the second set of gears (the shorter ratios) the display will revert to showing the first set, but don’t worry, if you save the set-up, the ratios you choose are present as you drive off, even if the display says otherwise. You will need to re-set them though, every time you leave the pits.

There is a choice of tyres - Street 90s, for those that like things authentic, Street and Semislicks. I suggest the latter is what most of us will be using for our best time. In testing the Street 90s felt the most satisfying but seemed to make the car roll more in the corners and they were over three secs slower that the surprisingly good, confidence inspiring, Street tyres. The Semislicks transform braking and turn in and were again about three secs a lap faster than the Street tyres. Here are the recommended pressures:
    Street 90s: Front 44psi / Rear 45psi
    Streets: Front 37psi / Rear 40psi
    Semislicks: Front 31psi / Rear 32psi

How to take part - Hot lap:
To enter, select Hotlap, choose the Ferrari GTO and the Mugello Circuit. Please setup the session as shown below:
    Mode: Hotlap
    Time of day: Free
    Ambient Temp: 26 Degrees
    Setup: Free
    Controller: Free
    Assists: Free

    Weekly Hotlap Challenge Championship League
    How it works:
    1. Enter the Weekly Hotlap Challenge as posted every Sunday evening and you will be automatically entered into the league table.
    2. Your ranking in the final standings, posted on Sunday evening, will earn you points, as follows:
    Place Points: 1st 15 2nd 14 3rd 13 4th 12 5th 11 6th 10 7th 9 8th 8 9th 7 10th 66
    3. Every player taking part in a WHC, but finishing outside the top 10 will get 4 points.
    4. Every player who is in the table, (ie has entered a previous WHC) but does not play that week will get three points each week.
    5. Players that join WHC after WHC#114 will be awarded 3 points retrospectively for every WHC missed. For example, if you enter WHC for the first time at WHC#124, your name will be added to the table, with 27 points, plus whatever you score in WHC#124.
    6. Specialist Challenges will also feature throughout the season. These will be as monthly mini-series, for example Formula 1 February or Muscle Car Month, or nominated car types, for example the best driver in road cars. These events will be announced in the WHC Thread.
The updated Championship league table will be displayed in a new post in the Console Lounge.

At the end of the year, the WHC before Xmas week, the winners will be declared -
    * Championship podium
    * Specialist Challenge Winners
    * 1st place Contributor (the most Bonus points)
    * 1st place Loyal Lapper (who has entered most regularly, most often, if there is a draw, Bonus points count, then Champ points)

One of my favourite car ever. I drew it many time as a kid. My favourite was the 250 GTO though. First time for Mugello and can't wait for it. Thanks

Great combo this one. Another car I’d never think of trying but it feels so good to drive.
    Good choice again Totall

  6. So... what sort of lap times are we all doing????:)
From testing, I think the winning time will be around 2:02/ 2:03, about a couple of secs off my testing time;):D
I'll get some lap time this afternoon and break the ice for everyone!

    2:02!!!! OMG!! im way off

    2:08’s hence why I haven’t posted a time yet.
Need to relearn this track ASAP
Last time I drove mugello was week #82 which is probably why I’m so slow.

  8. Hey Lewis, I was teasing!!:D But I like that you thought I wasn't!:)
2:08s is a solid start, but it's a long track and you know what some of the Aliens can do, hence my prediction.

I'm going to have to stop what I'm doing (sunbathing) and go and do a few laps....

You're right Totall. I was a bit ashame to post this knowing it's far from being competitive.

Just spinned around to learn the track. I guess I can improve that..
I also believe the aliens will be at 2.08 or even lower. We are proud of them

As soon as I read your post about the 2:02 and you only being a couple of seconds behind in testing
I immediately give up and went out to sit in the sun.
I honestly thought you were serious

  11. Sorry Lewis! That was my "wry" sense of humour! :D
Get back into the seat and post a low 2.08!:p

Edit - I'm still chuckling at this!

Shakedown, then a fiddle (pressures, camber and toe) which has, of course, made things less good. So, now a bit more dialled in, I'm going to revert to stock settings to check.
I'm using the middle transmission ratios with Set 2 and the semi slicks, one psi under the recommended.

  13. Never feel ashamed! Never! Not on the WHC forum at least.:)
We all know what you can do, you are new to the circuit and you've only done a few laps!
And even if you don't improve, we can all have our bad weeks. Just ask Sebastian Vettel.

Its a very tough circuit, there is a knack to several corners. Apart from the rubbish brakes, the car is forgiving but in return needs quite a bit of coaxing to keep it on line.
I reckon you'll be comfortably under 2.10 by the end of the week, but I do think the Aliens will be sub 2.05. The RSR lap record is 2.07.440, that usually gets beaten by around 2 secs.
I'm sure someone excellent will post a vid to show us how it should be done!

I’m really enjoying this combo but I’m so crap at mugello
It seems Most turns require setting the car up for the following turn which I’m just not doing right.

I was close to putting my wheel on eBay haha

But I believed it because of how fast he was last week.
I very much doubt a 2.02 is possible from me, in fact I’m certain of it. My goal is a low 2.07

  20. At Mugello, turns 3 and 4, 4 and 5, 6 and 7, 10 and 11 and sort of 13, are all sequence corners and require a similar approach.
Having watched earlier WHC vids, I noticed the Aliens always used a very tight line into the first turn, holding onto the kerb, allowing later braking (or more room.) This then opens out the following corner, making the line shallower and gives a faster, easier exit.
That's the theory anyway. I've drawn a picture in powerpoint, although I struggled to get the lines right, as you can see!:)
    upload_2019-5-13_16-58-56.png
PS - This is also a clear demonstration.... there is no need to be ashamed of anything on the WHC forum!:D:D:D
