1. Do you need support for Assetto Corsa Competizione? Please use the proper forum below and ALWAYS zip and attach the WHOLE "Logs" folder in your c:\users\*youruser*\AppData\Local\AC2\Saved. The "AppData" folder is hidden by default, check "Hidden items" in your Windows view properties. If you report a crash, ALWAYS zip and attach the WHOLE "Crashes" folder in the same directory. Do not post "I have the same issue" in an existing thread with a game crash, always open your own thread. Do not PM developers and staff members for personal troubleshooting and support.
  2. As part of our continuous maintenance and improvements to Assetto Corsa Competizione we will be releasing small updates on a regular basis during the esports season which might not go through the usual announcement process detailing the changes until a later version update where these changes will be listed retrospectively.
  3. If ACC doesn't start with an error or the executable is missing, please add your entire Steam directory to the exceptions in your antivirus software, run a Steam integrity check or reinstall the game altogether. Make sure you add the User/Documents/Assetto Corsa Competizione folder to your antivirus/Defender exceptions and exclude it from any file sharing app (GDrive, OneDrive or Dropbox)! The Corsair iCue software is also known to conflict with Input Device initialization, if the game does not start up and you have such devices, please try disabling the iCue software and try again. [file:unknown] [line: 95] secure crt: invalid error is a sign of antivirus interference, while [Pak chunk signing mismatch on chunk] indicates a corrupted installation that requires game file verification.
  4. When reporting an issue with saved games, please always zip and attach your entire User/Documents/Assetto Corsa Competizione/Savegame folder, along with the logs and the crash folder (when reporting related to a crash).

Generic Weekly Hotlap Challenge 171 – Short term or Long term?

Discussion in 'Console Lounge' started by Totall Wrytoff, Mar 21, 2020.

  1. Welcome to the thread for the Weekly Hotlap Challenge 171 - Short term or Long term?
It is surprise bonus week! There’s a double dose of infectious fun - isolate, immerse and enjoy!
    upload_2020-3-21_17-52-24.png
WHC 171 is a double challenge, because everything is closed and we may have a bit more spare time. It features two cars that we’ve never used in WHC and two low-use tracks. The Abarth 595 SS Step 2 around Brands Indy and the BM Z4 around the full Nordschleife Endurance. Both, for very, very different reasons, are quite surprising! I hope they help to take your mind off things!

    Short Term Challenge
    Hotlap:
Car: Abarth 595 SS Step 2
    Track: Brands Hatch Indy Circuit
    upload_2020-3-21_17-52-53.png
    Short term:
First up is the hysterical Abarth 595 SS Step 2 around Brands Hatch Indy - One of the smallest, lightest, lowest-powered cars in the game, to bomb around one of the shortest circuits.
This is just over a minute’s worth of fun and is going to surprise you. My god, the car is keen to change direction. And that isn’t a compliment on accuracy at the helm.
Change direction, in this case, means face the other way, usually just as you pass an apex. The wheelbase is so short, you have very little time. In fact, you’ll be amazed at how busy you are around a fairly simple circuit. The first few laps are about trying to get around successfully; then, it becomes a compellingly tricky balance of risk and carried speed. All the while, there’s this buzzing noise in your ears. After a while, you’ll get a bit more confident, which is when you spin it again!
    upload_2020-3-21_17-53-21.png
Paddock, Druids, Graham Hill (my spin favourite) and Clearways are all very easy corners at which to unintentionally, fully rotate the car through 360! Don’t laugh, but Surtees and McLaren can be taken flat, just a quick lift at Clearways and immediately back onto the power as the back end swings you round though Clark. Bzzzzzzzz!

Laptimewise the fastest, excluding GoodGame’s time, is a 1.03.404 and interestingly @Pretend racer posted a 1.04.040 almost two years ago. I think we’ll improve on those this week!

Recommended pressure for the Abarth’s Street tyre is 42 psi all round.

    Long Term Challenge
    Hotlap:
    Car: BMW Z4 E89 35is
    Track: Nordschleife - Endurance
    upload_2020-3-21_17-54-25.png
    Long term.
This challenge is about going for a good long drive to get away from it all! No mad rush.
The Nordschleife Endurance circuit is 25.4km long. More than 13 laps of Brands Indy. This isn’t a challenge where you’ll be looking for tenths…. Treat it like a rag down your favourite road!

The circuit is a beast, many WHCers find it a bit too much of a challenge, so we want a car that drives well and doesn’t punish….
After trying a selection, including the Cayman S and the Z4 Step1, to my surprise, the choice is a no brainer. The Z4 car feels better than the Cayman. Much better. And sounds better too. I’m really surprised, the Z4 is a peach and is going into my top 5 road cars, despite the lack of manual gearbox.

The exquisite chassis balance turns ham-footed cornering into hero drift. The engine note climbs from sonorous growl to mechanical blare, urging you to push a bit more. In comparison the Step 1 is too rough and noisy, the Cayman S is quiet, a bit detached and frankly, feels dull.
The Z4, despite being heavier and having less power than the Cayman, feels lighter on its feet and much more up for it.
The decent thrust and great noise is down to BMWs three litre, turbocharged, inline 6, the N54. I was surprised (again) to find it was turbo’ed. It feels remarkably similar to and I thought it was the S54 from the E46 M3. After you’ve had a go, you won’t be surprised to hear that the N54 has won five straight International Engine of the Year awards and three straight “Ward's 10 Best Engines” awards. It is good.
    upload_2020-3-21_17-55-10.png
Every time I drive around the virtual Nordschleife, I’m amazed. We need to say a huge “thank-you” those responsible!
    His name is Gustav Eichler.
In 1925 his firm, Eichler Architekturbüro, was commissioned by the General German Automobile Club (ADAC), to deliver a new circuit to showcase German engineering, German motorsports and to rival the Targa Fiorio. What he achieved then is more than gobsmacking. Today it is totally unthinkable.
Gustav and his crew knocked up 25km of utterly brilliant road in a most astonishing two years.
TWO YEARS…? Design and build….? Planning approval…? Unreal.
(Hello Circuit of Wales, are you reading….?)

So, again, thank-you Gustav! Just as we can’t imagine the speed and quality of your design, engineering and construction, I bet he didn’t imagine how many thousands of people would enjoy it virtually. What a top bloke!

There’s only one time for this combi on RSR, set by @Sebastian Cron in April 2017 - a 10 mins 8.837 secs

Recommended tyre pressures for the Z4 are:
    Street - 42 front 43psi rear
    Semislicks - 33 front 34psi rear

Both combos are quite the challenge whether coming from an F1 car or not. The abarth is like walking a tight rope. The z4 I have a very hard time figuring out. My only clean lap was full of oversteer. Trying to figure out how to cooperate with the soft suspension and trying to manage the body roll, keep the car in the stroke of the suspension with the brakes as opposed to blowing through it (subsequently blowing through the turn too) from too abruptly applying brakes. I feel like the Z4 is literally driven with the brakes and I haven't been able to get on the same page with the finesse of the braking that is required for this car to really shine due to the soft unforgiving suspension. What a change up compared to last week! Time to go to work on the Ring...

  6. I've turned the brakes down to 98% in the BMW.
    They are too grabby otherwise.

Haven't had participated in the WHC for a while so it is nice to be at it again. Decided to get started with this one as I don't think I will be able to tame the F1 car in 1 night.

I uploaded a tune I had from the nords and wouldn't you know it, I binned it while braking for the last corner. So next lap I made a few mistakes but I managed to put a time on the board. On my third lap I did better but its not my best yet, but its a wr for now.

Overall, I have had almost the exact opposite experience of @DriverModFTW, I feel the z4 is driven with the throttle. The brakes are overkill on this car, just like on the mazda mx5 cup car and they both handle very well. Consequently, the engine is the weak link of the equation, and as a result it feels anemic to me, and sounds terrible to boot. So with the setup I used, this car becomes a momentum car like the mxcup car - any time that you're not at full throttle costs time. It looses speed easily because of the awesome brakes but the engine cant get it back up to speed, and since it rails around the corners you can carry that momentum easier. I tend to lift and coast a little more than applying brakes per se, or apply both the throttle and brake at the same time to keep the suspension in check.

I love the amount of suspension travel though - it just lets you settle nicely into the corner, and the angle lets you know how fast you're going. Last week felt like I was driving a wooden board, so stiff theres only a hint of body roll I couldn't tell how hard the car was working in the corners. Anyways, glad it takes all kinds to make the world go 'round.

Finally, someone has squeaked, by the slimmest margin(!), past Sabine Schmitz's time - the one she set in a Ford Transit o_O
(How can the BMW Z4 be so damn slow? I expect to find out later, even though I'm no fan of the Nords.)

I dont remember exactly but I'm pretty sure that was set on the "tourist" layout, which does not include the partial gp circuit. I could be wrong, but that would explain it.

  11. This is one of those comments that you look at the following day and think "what a tw*t"

"Grabby brakes", is just failing to properly modulate, ham-footed and poor driving!:D:D:D

Well, I've clearly been focusing too much on them, which is why I'm so slow in the z4 thus far. Such a difference from a racecar back to a street car. I have to relearn braking technique for this car.

Ok, so for this challenge I started on the Tourist and Nords track to get used to the car. I went for 10° settings. All fine. The Endurance layout at 26°had some surprises to offer. The car would lock up over the kerbs at Adenauer Forst two times, spinning me out instantly. So I feel there is some sort of bug, as this did not happen at lower temperatures. I made two smaller errors which prevented a 9:59:xxx. After having driven the full lap I instantly existed the game without taking a screenshot - stupid me, but habits. But hey, at least I can upload the video - ahah, demo is broken... So I am a bit out of words. I can only offer the RSR entry, it shows the correct entries. I am sorry, it is all I have now :mad::mad:.
Does someone have the same issue with the demos? Every 20th demo or so is full size, but it stops somewhere in the middle when played. So far I have not been able to make out what causes the issue.
Anyway, I uploaded the lap on the Tourist layout and hopefully it helps you.

So, ahead to the Abarth. This crazy fly is like one of those crazy spinning firecrackers - in German "Wilde Biene". Not really likeable, but you simply need to remember, when it breaks out, by that it becomes controllable. Not a clean lap, but enough for now. Often the slowest cars are the most challenging ones :).

  15. Wow! Stunning set of times @GoodGame.eXistenZ !

But, for the Long Term Challenge, I think we can only accept a screenshot of a "9:59:xxx" from you.;):D
    Or less!

The Z4 is pissing me off, so I went back to the mosquito and finally drew some blood. RSR has something wrong with their leaderboard for the Abarth/Brands Hatch Indy combo..the person above me, Thomas, has slower splits and yet a quicker time. I can not make sense of it. Anyone able to explain a .307 sec difference in split times, yet his lap is .160 quicker lap??

That really is impressively broken. Your splits add up to your actual time; his do not... Did you report it yet?

I really stink at this challenge. Ever since I first started on xbox1 with the career mode, I have NEVER gotten along with this particular vehicle. It is literally my kryptonite in this sim.

Write them a message here. But from my experiences...forget it. You are happy to get a response after all.
