1. Do you need support for Assetto Corsa Competizione? Please use the proper forum below and ALWAYS zip and attach the WHOLE "Logs" folder in your c:\users\*youruser*\AppData\Local\AC2\Saved. The "AppData" folder is hidden by default, check "Hidden items" in your Windows view properties. If you report a crash, ALWAYS zip and attach the WHOLE "Crashes" folder in the same directory. Do not post "I have the same issue" in an existing thread with a game crash, always open your own thread. Do not PM developers and staff members for personal troubleshooting and support.
  2. As part of our continuous maintenance and improvements to Assetto Corsa Competizione we will be releasing small updates on a regular basis during the esports season which might not go through the usual announcement process detailing the changes until a later version update where these changes will be listed retrospectively.
  3. If ACC doesn't start with an error or the executable is missing, please add your entire Steam directory to the exceptions in your antivirus software, run a Steam integrity check or reinstall the game altogether. Make sure you add the User/Documents/Assetto Corsa Competizione folder to your antivirus/Defender exceptions and exclude it from any file sharing app (GDrive, OneDrive or Dropbox)! The Corsair iCue software is also known to conflict with Input Device initialization, if the game does not start up and you have such devices, please try disabling the iCue software and try again. [file:unknown] [line: 95] secure crt: invalid error is a sign of antivirus interference, while [Pak chunk signing mismatch on chunk] indicates a corrupted installation that requires game file verification.
  4. When reporting an issue with saved games, please always zip and attach your entire User/Documents/Assetto Corsa Competizione/Savegame folder, along with the logs and the crash folder (when reporting related to a crash).

Generic Weekly Hotlap Challenge 183 – Rampant in the Wild West

Discussion in 'Console Lounge' started by Totall Wrytoff, Jun 13, 2020.

  1. Welcome to the thread for the Weekly Hotlap Challenge 183 – Rampant in the Wild West

This idea for this week’s challenge, as with most weeks, is to try to totally contrast with last week’s (mega) challenge! So, this week, it is lots of space and lots of wild thrust.

    Challenge: Hotlap
    Car: Ferrari F40
    Track: Black Cat County Long
    upload_2020-6-13_17-54-49.png
    upload_2020-6-13_17-54-59.png
The Porsche Cayman S was the original thought for this week, but it stays in the garage, still unused in WHC.
Superb car. Another day. It is a bit quiet and sensible.

Instead, we are going to ride a Cavallino Rampante, the wild Ferrari F40. Keeping to the WHC objective of providing variety, it is not at all short on power and we are going to have plenty of room. Four lanes in fact!
The change of plan is entirely due to how masochistically fun the F40 is, (we’ve already run it at Spa and around the Alex Nordschleife,) and secondly, due an article I’ve just read in car mag, evo.
The article compares the driving of the 288 GTO, F40, F50 and the Enzo and is a repeat due to covid, but anyway having read about driving the F40, I felt we all had to do it! Even if it is again!
I hope the very excellent motoring hack John Barker, in return for a named credit (!) won’t mind me using his lovely, inspiring prose:

“…the twin IHI turbos spool up progressively, the steering is light enough to allow rapid correction and the F40’s chassis is poised and faithful.
Slot third gear, squeeze the throttle and you can enjoy most of the F40’s power without provoking the tail. This isn’t a fizz-bang turbocharged engine; once it’s on boost you can meter out the thrust with satisfying precision, conducting the ebb and flow to match the road as it unfolds before you.”

Sounds fun, but make no mistake, John Barker is a helm-smith of the highest order. Driving the F40, (on the sim!) you are constantly aware that you are managing something wild and with its own will, provoked by your right foot. And that something wild is no pussy cat, although it does demand you be gentle and smooth. If you are clumsy, especially in the slower corners and extra especially in the fast corners, it will face you the other way and spit you into the barrier. I should mention, there is no TCS and no ABS.
    Good laugh.
NB – In testing and after last week, I was surprised to find that you have to be quite ham-footed to lock up in the F40. Or panicking due to the speed you are doing and the fast closing proximity of the wall ahead. The brakes squeak and squeal, which would indicate racing brakes and they need warming up before optimum performance, perhaps. (Is that modelled in AC?)
    upload_2020-6-13_17-55-32.png
We’ve only used Black Cat County Long twice before in nearly 200 WHCs. One of those times was as recently as WHC168, using the LMP Hybrid Porsche, but, if you entered that challenge, you won’t recognise it as the same track. It feels twice as long.
(Here’s a track map, please feel free to chip in with corner name suggestions or alternatives to those proposed.)

The long wide, fictional road suits the F40 perfectly. Mostly.
In the few second gear corners you will really need to be on your toes as you try to deploy the power.
    Oh yes indeedy you will!
1st gear? Crazy idea, much safer to wait for 2nd to spool up.
The amount of torque getting through to the rears is deceptive. Once you realise… it’s too late.
Third gear covers most of the circuit in a very satisfying manner. Fourth gear gets the heart rate and fear factor up, because by now you are really travelling and you know what’s coming.
Very, very excitingly at Black Cat Long, even with the F40’s intergalactic gearing, there’s room to hit fifth gear.
However, this comes with quite a large caveat and it brings me nicely to Turn 2.

On your first hotlap you will approach Turn 2 in fifth through the long, easy turn one, no doubt revelling in the rich seam of torquey thrust. But, trust me, selecting fifth is a decision with very big implications.
As soon as fifth is engaged, you need to start thinking very deeply and extremely quickly about how you are going to stop. You don’t have much time and you need to get the answer exactly right….
On your second hotlap, if you are like me, you will stay safely in fourth!
Turn two, “The Mare,” is not named after a female wild pony. I think this is one of the most difficult corners, to get absolutely right, or even get around, in the whole of Assetto Corsa. As you get onto the brakes you absolutely have to have the car pointing straight. You’ll see what I mean!
Most especially in the F40. It is all about slowing the car correctly, getting the very narrow entry right and getting every single one of the multiple corrections correct as you deploy the power and exit. Same goes for Turn 5, in the right hand sweeper, you need to get the car straight before slowing. Oh, and I would take 3rd gear through Dream’s End. 2nd is only for those with the fastest of reactions and also at the very top of their game!
Otherwise the wide turns allow you to “meter out the thrust” as described above (or, get it wrong and have time to correct.)
    upload_2020-6-13_17-55-57.png
I managed to flip it and travel quite a distance, airborne and upside down.
As we learnt from last week, accuracy and precision are worth whole seconds. Even though the roads are wide, this week still demands you get the lines precisely right. (See pic above.) Once there, sit back and let the car do the work. Give it plenty of time, don’t try to rush the braking or hustle it through a turn, let the road unfold before you!
Apart from Turn 2. Eyes out on stalks!

Street tyres or Semi slicks, recommended operating PSI is:
..Street – Front 38 Rear 40 (good luck!)
    ..Semi slicks – Front 30 Rear 32

    What’s the pace?
The best time so far is a 4:00.017
The next best is a 4:05 and I’ve just done a 4:08 on a twitchy, tip toe-eey test lap, (stock save for tyres and pressures) which would put me 5th.
So it’s down to us this week, I suspect the podiums will be in the mid to low 3 mins 50 secs range… with the top step occupied by a 3 mins high 40s…..?

Unbutton the shirt, pop the big medallion on and let it rip!
    Carefully though.

Just to get the ball rolling.
Here is a lap where I held on and stayed upright all the way to the end!
Adding to my intro above, to start with, the car feels horrendous and your nervous inputs unsettle it further.
But you get used to it and after a few laps you can start to drive it with confidence.

Your mindset needs to be; "I'm the boss!" rather than "Don't punish me Mistress..." ( o_O)
I hope to get to a second or two off the 4 mins mark this week.:)

I tried to use my screencapture to record my lap like I always do, but this time there was a few spots where the screen just went red. Not sure why that is happening. I used the ingame replay and then screen captured that and it worked fine...

I forgot to save the setup that I used to set my fast lap. The settings were -1.5 camber front, -1.4 camber rear. Toe was around 12 or 13 front and rear, I think. I'll probably have another go at this cause there was a few spots where I was in the wrong gear or shifted when I didn't need to, etc. I might be able to shave another second or so. I'll make sure to save my setup too. But next time I'm gonna make it cloudy because the 'white' road was blinding me...

  7. WAY-HEY! Three fifty five!!
    Wow. I think that's a stunning time @Pretend racer.
There aren't many reeds around here, but I've found them and been blown into them!
Great vid. Regarding my comment above, you obviously The Boss.
We know you like a loose rear end but that's great car control. I would have crashed a number of times if that was me driving.:)

Tough car for me to handle. Without the tyre pressures adjusted it was a spin fest.

Same time as TW and a few people have never played Black Cat so I recorded it as a bit of a track introduction.

Then when it comes time to post I see PR is a fifth of a minute faster. :) :)

Ah well, it's uploaded now so I might as well post it. But if you want any tips, watch the other one!

I’ve lost count of how many laps it’s taken me to get round without hitting something. I went round very slowly for 2 or 3 laps to try and memorise the track but as soon as I tried to go faster I was hitting the barriers right, left & centre. I took this lap a bit more gently. There’s definitely a LOT of room for improvement but it’s not a car that I feel comfortable with.

After a few more attempts I managed 2 clean laps in a row, each faster than before. I’ve improved by 10 seconds but I’m a bit afraid to push too hard & completely lose control, especially in the corners where the braking zones seem so long. I think I’ll be happy if I can knock another 5 seconds off my time, anything else would be a bonus.

What has happened to your wheel?

I wondered if it was worth posting just for an improvement of a second but as it’s faster I shouldn’t really complain.

@Totall Wrytoff Had a connection issue but got it solved. Still I struggle with this. That Turbo kicks in and it blows everything to parts under your bum

Just over a 3 second improvement. Braking a bit earlier seems to have helped a lot and I’m trying not to rush things quite so much. That will do for one day.

    Unbelievable. Crazy.
    How excruciatingly embarrassing too.

And it highlights just how far online racing has risen in the last few months. A year ago, people would have laughed. Now, you loose your day job.

So any unusually big improvements this week and I'm going to think you've flown @GoodGame.eXistenZ in to do your Hot Lap!!:D
