This week we’re going to the US! After a three way shoot out for the car, I’ve gone for the beefy, or horsey, Ford Mustang. Original, Detroit muscle.
It will certainly appeal to those who like to feel a bit of weight transfer through the corners!
But I love the noise.
What an utterly fabulous sound it makes!
Reportedly, no petrol cars will be sold in the UK after 2030. We have only nine years left to enjoy the internal combustion engine…. The exhilarating, blaring wall of five litre V8 engine music that you conduct with your right foot, will be just a memory. This visceral, life affirming experience will be completely unknown to our grandchildren.
The Ford feels very heavy around Laguna Seca and you’ll probably “Yeee-hah!” aloud the first time you go off the edge at the Corkscrew, but it has satisfying thrust and that petrol-head rock-anthem sound.

Let’s get it whilst we can.

“Sticking with the GT4 theme, but because I've grown too used to mashing the brakes and stomping the gas, we're going to use the only car in the game with no TC and no ABS - the Maserati Gran Turismo MC GT4.

This week's challenge is a 5 min Hotstint around the mighty Bathurst Mt Panorama circuit. It’s going to be a 3 lap shoot out, only with a slight twist: Adopting one of Bernie Ecclestone’s great ideas, we've turned on the sprinklers and made the track wet! Nothing too dramatic, but enough to liven things up and really test your braking.
Overheating wets, or cold slicks. The choice is yours, and you also have a choice of track grip this week, grippy-Green or slippery-rubbered in Optimum... I've no idea which will be faster in these conditions, so you may need to experiment….”


Tyres:
GT4 Slick ideal operating pressures are 26.5 psi all round.

Ultra slow after GG's reported time. I think I messed up every corner.

Changed tire pressures (front 20/28, rear 31/30, cold), turned TC off. Standard gear ratio was making me change gears right before braking areas, so I changed final gear ratio to 3.31, making gears longer and reducing shifting. It's worth trying gear ratio 3.73, I'll do that another day. Note: I'm using H shifter and clutch pedal.

If only the track was a little wetter and it was only a little colder - voila - rain tires ftw.
If the track would only be a little drier and it would be a little warmer slicks ftw.

Slick tyres all the way. The engineer keeps recommending wets and even automatically puts them on between stints.

Occasionally my Fanatec shifter (14months old) is giving me 1st gear instead of 3rd or 5th. That's an immediate broken engine.

 

Sucks to hear - typical Fanatec issue.
THere are several videos on fixes on youtube in case fanatec would refuse any warranty. Takes some time but the issue is usually just a small one.

I'm struggling to stop the car as the wheels lock whenever I put very much pressure on the brake pedal (seems to be the same for a few GT4 cars), however running the same car at Paul Ricard in a 10 minute stint that is one of the monthly challenges I've managed to improve my time by over 30 seconds. Here's hoping I can make it to a 3rd lap with enough practice.

My first attempt was with slick tyres but this one was with wets & I've surprised myself by going quicker although the tyres were obviously overheating at the end, but is this the way forward for me?

I went with green track and slicks - closed the brake ducts - started with 24 psi and ended with 27 psi

Thought I would give this a quick lunchtime bash. First time I’ve seen greasy as a track condition which, when combined with a non TC and ABS car driven for the first time, was mighty playful shall we say!
