Nope, it's completely wrong. Back then they were banging each others cars and taking unfair moves just like they do today.
It's just that there weren't TV cameras around everywhere taking shots at every angle and there were discussions only if it was a really serious matter (e.g. Senna vs. Prost).

 

Very true. You can just look at the makeup of the drivers. Today they are literally all karting stars from when they were about 4 years old and it has been drilled into them that if you do not win a championship you are a failure. With the F1 climate these days, that is only realistic if you are in the best car, no matter how good of a driver you are. So it means they are not as happy just being in F1 full stop.

Look at the older drivers from say the 80's half of them were in their 30's at least and that is considered "old" these days. They had grown up a lot more and the fact that the cars were knowhere near as safe meant they had to have respect for each other as death was a genuine possibility.

Add all that to the one rule for one person and another for someone else and you have crying children haha. If someone else had moved in the braking zone like Verstapps loves to do, they would get a penalty hands down.

 

Yes. I'm reading Nigel Mansell's book at the moment, he was 27 iirc when he made his first F1 start.

I agree about the danger aspect breeding respect. Drive like a nutter in the 70s and you were very likely to get yourself or someone else killed. If you were lucky and that stuff didn't happen your opponents would most likely give you a good hiding after the race lol...

Yea, I feel like paved run off taken to the excesses it has been lately has worked against the climate of respect as well. Why worry about punting someone off track when they can just keep their foot down and file back in behind you? Its especially bad with GT racing on F1 grade circuits. For American series that go to COTA its like everyone takes crazy pills before that race compared to what you see on the tracks that have almost no run off.
