1. Do you need support for Assetto Corsa Competizione? Please use the proper forum below and ALWAYS zip and attach the WHOLE "Logs" folder in your c:\users\*youruser*\AppData\Local\AC2\Saved. The "AppData" folder is hidden by default, check "Hidden items" in your Windows view properties. If you report a crash, ALWAYS zip and attach the WHOLE "Crashes" folder in the same directory. Do not post "I have the same issue" in an existing thread with a game crash, always open your own thread. Do not PM developers and staff members for personal troubleshooting and support.
  2. As part of our continuous maintenance and improvements to Assetto Corsa Competizione we will be releasing small updates on a regular basis during the esports season which might not go through the usual announcement process detailing the changes until a later version update where these changes will be listed retrospectively.
  3. If ACC doesn't start with an error or the executable is missing, please add your entire Steam directory to the exceptions in your antivirus software, run a Steam integrity check or reinstall the game altogether. Make sure you add the User/Documents/Assetto Corsa Competizione folder to your antivirus/Defender exceptions and exclude it from any file sharing app (GDrive, OneDrive or Dropbox)! The Corsair iCue software is also known to conflict with Input Device initialization, if the game does not start up and you have such devices, please try disabling the iCue software and try again. [file:unknown] [line: 95] secure crt: invalid error is a sign of antivirus interference, while [Pak chunk signing mismatch on chunk] indicates a corrupted installation that requires game file verification.
  4. When reporting an issue with saved games, please always zip and attach your entire User/Documents/Assetto Corsa Competizione/Savegame folder, along with the logs and the crash folder (when reporting related to a crash).

Generic Weekly Hotlap Challenge 178 – Sir Stirling Moss and the age of chivalry

Discussion in 'Console Lounge' started by Totall Wrytoff, May 9, 2020.

  1. Welcome to the thread for the Weekly Hotlap Challenge 178 – A tribute to Sir Stirling Moss. This week I want to acknowledge and pay a little tribute to one of the greatest racing drivers this planet has seen.

    Hotlap:
Car: Lotus Type 25, or Lotus Elise SC
    Track: Silverstone GP
    upload_2020-5-9_17-53-15.png
    upload_2020-5-9_17-53-23.png
Sir Stirling Moss, even more than being a racer, was a gentleman. Qualities forgotten in today’s world, he had principles and a moral code that wavered for nothing. He is remembered for that as much as his driving, which speaks volumes.
It cost him a World Championship, but what’s more important?
    Exactly.

Since we’ve just done the Maseratis, ideally, we would be driving the Lotus 18.
Sir Stirling retired from racing in 1962 after a massive crash, whilst testing a Lotus at Goodwood. The earliest Lotus we have was introduced the year after Sir Stirling retired from racing, the Type 25 from 1962. But, perhaps Sir Stirling tested early prototypes….

The Lotus Type 25 was a revolution in F1 design and many of those innovations are still present today. Typically, from an idea developed over a good lunch and sketched on a restaurant napkin, Chapman developed the fully stressed 'monocoque' design. This was stronger, more rigid and so compact that drivers in the Lotus 25 seemed like lying down instead of sitting in the car. So it became known as "the bathtub".
On sitting in the car Chapman, a big bloke, found that he could fit quite comfortably. He immediately announced "This cockpit's too wide ... take another inch and a half out out of it!" Dick Scammell, one of the mechanics, later remarked: "None of us really knew what we were doing, but it all took shape very nicely and it certainly looked right."
    upload_2020-5-9_17-54-16.png
None of us remember this logo!

The Type 25 is powered by an amazing sounding 1.5 litre V8, supplied by Coventry Climax. Reving to 9,000 rpm, this produces only 195bhp, but, as you will feel, the car weighs just over 450kgs, and it’s perfect.

    A modern alternative?
The Lotus Elise SC - If you are not a fan of the old ways, there is an alternative. The Lotus Elise SC’s WHC debut.
    upload_2020-5-9_17-54-50.png
The Elise was launched in 1996 with, as an entirely new Lotus, quite a big fanfare. I remember thinking how massively expensive it was for just a basic tub and an old Rover engine. Due to its mid-engine layout and on limit skittishness, the Series 1 Elise rapidly got a reputation for being less forgiving than the Spanish Inquisition.

The Lotus SC is a Series 2 car from 2008. The SC is powered by Toyota’s 1.8L straight four, 2ZZ-GE engine, boosted by a Roots supercharger to produce 217 bhp for its 930kgs.
Henry Catchpole said in an EVO mag 2008 review, “There’s usually an element of slightly raw thrashiness about these Toyota engines, but the way the revs rise and fall as you work up and down the gearbox in the Elise SC, is like butter mixed with honey.”
    See what you think.
    upload_2020-5-9_17-55-21.png

    The full Silverstone GP Circuit.
    Hallowed Tarmac.
It’s been mucked around with, but still.
I’ve been lucky enough to have done track days at Silverstone. I didn’t anticipate this, but when you roll out of the pit lane onto the surprisingly narrow strip of road, “little old you” are following the wheel tracks of all of the greatest drivers we’ve known…. and the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.

Out on track, with stock set-up, the Type 25 requires an adjustment to your normal approach to driving. The trick seems to be to get the braking out of the way much earlier. This allows you to get the nose right into the corner and play with the throttle to manage your route through and out the otherside. The car is so light and tactile it is just a delight.

The Elise SC, with half a century of tyre and chassis development, retains that same tactility and playfulness. But it is a much smaller window!! It requires you to be much more accurate. It has an annoying engine note though, the supercharger whines away at you.

Lap time wise, both cars should post similar times. 2 mins 31 secs is the target around Silverstone GP for the Type 25. But, it took me quite a few attempts before I managed a clean lap at 2:34 dead. Tyre pressures are important, the engine limiter seems to have no real effect! For the Elise, I was a few seconds slower.
In the Elise, I see GG.e has already claimed world fastest, with a quite brilliant 2:26.770. More tellingly 10th place is a 2 mins 40 secs, compared to a 2 mins 38 for the Type 25. So it's close.

Recommended hot tyre pressures, in psi:
    …Elise SC: Street - fronts 32 rears 34 Semislicks - - fronts 29 rears 31
    …Type 25: 1963 GP compound – a good 45 psi all round!

Rest in peace Sir Stirling Moss. You were a very special person. The world has lost a great gentleman. Thank-you for showing us, not only the way to drive, but also the way to behave.

I really appreciate how the organisation puts in the effort and adds every week a little story to the challenge. Really is engaging and thank you for doing so.

I probably run only the classic Lotus, I can't stand the Elise

I agree, the name Elise is linked to being a great drivers car. However, my dispise for this car comes from AC itself. I did some stuff of the career where I found the Elise's just terrible to drive. Same as Exige and Evora. The only one that makes me smile is the Evora GT4. That one drives fantastic.

I'll see if I give the Elise a go....

First go out last night, quite a few laps to get the tyre pressures even, optimise the trans.
Haven't touched the suspension. I see ride height could be dropped significantly, which always helps with these cars.
    I'm at 37 38 38 39 for the tyre values. (console)
Then had a longish run and got to within 4/10ths of the world record.
    I'm feeling stirling!:D

Not much to say about the Elise - I love it, although the stock Elise is a bit understeery. But just throw it into the corner and accelerate - that is all it takes :)

Never driven any of the classis Lotus. So, I had to learn the car and learn how to keep it stable under braking, which is the hardest part with this car. Not a perfect lap, but happy so far. Think I'll focus on the Elise for the rest of the week, this thing has next to no grip and the brakes leave a lot to be desired! Fair play to anyone driving it for real in anger back in the 60's with the circuits and the safety standards of the time as well.

I tried to keep her as tidy as possible but as others (aliens) have shown, there seems to be a lot more to get out of her. My drive was done stock with 5L of fuel.

@P308R Very smooth lap again. If you could get it into a small drift before each turn, you can accelerate earlier and get rid of the understeer.

@Totall Wrytoff : Thanks. Did not want to make it too easy for you there :p

Just a quick go for now, love this car but took a moment to remember how to make it unstable under braking :D

Loaded some old race setup from Nurb GP, 4 laps, restarted to correct PSI, then another lap and a half fiddling with brake bias and getting the feel; restarted then a couple of 29s so quite pleased so far to just sneak inside 2s of the lead, almost remembering how to be fast in this car, next to hook it up the whole lap and remove about 15 mistakes, and we might be onto something :)

Just a quick run round for the leaderboard.
    It needed a back marker.

@GoodGame.eXistenZ has got off to a flying start! In fact, he's completed disappeared into the 27s, for both cars. Interestingly, he's faster in the 2008 plastic sports car than the 1962/3 F1 car.
I could try a bit harder in the "Elsie" but I find her whining a bit tyre-some. (ouch)
Meanwhile, despite admitting to a mistake per corner, @LeiF posts an excellent time in the 29s.
Clearly some of us are making at least three or four mistakes per corner!:D
@Peggy11 and @P308R, aka Bastian, are getting to grips... no that's a terrible choice of expression..., are working on finding grip in the vintage Lotus!

Great lap from @GoodGame.eXistenZ , bar one tenth, he's FOUR seconds faster than the next bloke on RSR....
@Mustang 500 got stuck in early with Elise and got on very well. His time, despite being over a second slower than GoodGame, is just under two seconds faster than the 2nd placed man on the RSR leader board. Excellent lap.

Incidentally, the Elise was named after Elisa Artioli, granddaughter of Romano Artioli, chairman of Lotus and Bugatti at the car's launch.
Since a picture tells a thousand words, here she is with Series 1 and Series 3.......
