I was wondering the same thing. A lot of effort has already gone into creating the 2020 liveries for all the e-Sports events. With great support of SRO, Kunos and all teams involved, it wouldn't surprise me if they push to get the 2020 season in ACC as a whole with further involvement for 2021. Definitely interesting times!

Wouldn't say that's necessarily true as a lot of safety systems in modern cars are derived from race cars, but sure you're correct that every sport is a game :p Just saying virtual racing won't replace the real thing.

Don't be so sure, I'm certain we're just one or 2 more seasons away from having sim racing groupies.

I agree, you raise such an important point. In truth any competition between one or more individuals, where rules have been defined can be considered a game, this includes ritualized war, therefore sim racing is a competition which is just as valid as driving the physical cars around a track. This difference is not in the compitition but the tools that can be applied.

I'm equally as sure that simracing won't replace real racing, FIFA won't replay football, fighting games won't replace MMA and porn won't replace sex. Virtual is virtual, it's not the real thing. Ofcourse they can live side by side and ofcourse they can be (and are) equally competitive, but in the end playing a game is just playing a game.

I rather wonder what is the runtime of the contract between Kunos and SRO. And if at some point, when it ends, Kunos will again go their 'normal' Assetto Corsa way, like in Assetto Corsa 2 releasing on PC and next gen Consoles in 2023 or so.
My non-educated guess is that we wont hear about another Kunos game besides ACC in 2020. Rather 2021.

From memory it was initially a 3 year license, so I'm thinking it's possible 2020 could be the final year of development (although SRO seems to be getting into the idea of the game now, so who knows).

As far as future projects are concerned, I'm not totally ruling out an AC Sailing Simulator

SRO was always switched on to sim racing. They began way back with GTR and GTR2. Sadly issues with Porsche and Ferrari licensing stopped GTR3 (the original one anyway). Shift 2 had the FIA GT licence and then of course iRacing had the Blancpain license for a period which I presume was through SRO. But I agree with the rise of e-sport I'm sure SRO are even more aware of simracing's value.

The difference between sim racing and real racing is much smaller than the difference between Fifa and soccer, or the UFC game and real MMA. The skills used in racing also work in sim racing to the point real racing teams use sims for practice. The same can't be said for soccer games.

But I would agree that sim racing isn't going to replace real racing, or come even close. But with the rise of social media influencers and how easy it is to tap into their fanbase, there's room there for virtual events to become more popular, maybe even surpassing some small time Motorsports.

Yeah, I've always been really skeptical of e-sports, but the current SRO e-sports races have been really appealing. I think it's because I can actually just go and do that myself. Not just pretend I'm doing it, but actually do it.

Not denying there isn't a smaller difference, in the end it's just a game.

Sure, but I think sim racing can be a bit of a lifeline for racing in general. Real world racing has lost it's mass appeal, people used to go for the spectacle of seeing marvellous machines. That general audience is gone and it's mostly the people that are really into racing that are left. Sim racing gives people an opportunity to race and understand all the rules so they can get into it as a sport they understand.

It's like when I first started watching MMA and didn't understand ground game. I thought it was just two lads hugging on the ground. It's not until I learned more about it that I could actually appreciate that style of fighting.

I think sim racing can have that effect on sim racers. I can watch a race, any race and know when a guy has made a mistake that will make him vulnerable in the next braking zone. I know what's going on and it maks it more exciting for me to watch a race. Even though I watched racing before I got into sim racing, I didn't really fully understand what I was watching.

Real racing should be using sim racing to get more people into racing in general. They should be pushing it at every event, having a sim race as a support race along side the other support classes. It will gain them more followers if they keep pushing it.

Imola I can imagine Kunos could still put out this year (provided they have time among other work), since little changed there since their existing scan for AC. Scanning new Zandvoort and Magny Cours during these times will likely prove difficult. Maybe they can buy it from another studio (though no idea if anyone scanned 2020 Zandvoort yet).

I see, so it would be possible.

The question is of course if the devs see it as viable investment. They didn't bother implementing the 2019 changes to Paul Ricard either, even though that wouldn't even require the investment into scan data and rebuilding the entire circuit.

The 2020 changes to Zandvoort are huge and exciting though.

The 2019 changes to Ricard, though important for realism, were resurfacing and re-profiling the pit lane.

Codies mentioned they had scan data “available” for new Zandvoort. Maybe Studio 397 used the same. There’s scanning and scanning though. The R Factor version does look rough, although they admitted it’s only an alpha.
