First impressions of VR

    Hi all,

    I was very excited to try ACC in VR (Oculus Rift) and just tried it today! Some of my first impressions:

    - The graphics are choppy when looking around. I tried reducing the graphics quality, but it remained unacceptable. It's a game-stopper at this moment unfortunately. Should I lower my graphics even more? The forum discussed somewhere that the game is not using native Oculus SDK implementation. Is this true? That would not be the right approach and would explain the poor performance on Rift.
    - For VR, please remove the scenes where you have the player "fly" over the circuit. It is nauseating and doesn't really contribute anything.
    - I could control the menu with the steering wheel and keyboard, but not with the mouse (as in the desktop version). This is not ideal, as I'd much rather click the desired option, rather than having to select using left/right arrows. Otherwise the arrows on my steering wheel work fine, which is nice.
    - There should be an easy way to skip the intro video when starting the game. I find it already annoying and it seems too loud as well (does it ignore the master volume?).
    - On the positive side: the controls work fine and the force feedback seems nice. Also, it seems - at first glance - that the assignment issues when unplugging/changing USB hardware from AC1 are gone.
    - The sound is great. An improvement over AC1 and adding to the immersion.

    Overall, my idea is that this could be a great racing simulator in VR, but the performance issues need to be fixed and some minor quirks need to be ironed out.

    You can skip intro videos and screens with enter key (same key used to proceed forward)

    Mouse implementation doesn’t exist yet and I’m not sure it will but yes we all want it!

    For the stuttering issue I found playing around with the Ctrl + keypad 1-3 seems to help resolve. I think it may be a ASW issue and we should probably be reporting these as Rift users. You can also enable FPS hud in the hud file by manually enabling that setting.

    With Oculus Rift it's better to create a game profile from Oculus Tray Tool, and set the ACC.exe to ASW 45fps, and lock the framerate ingame to 45fps.

    I found this on another post somewhere, it gives some good improvements :

    But then I searched again to improve it for my taste :

    I found out the supersampling works better if it's set from Oculus Tray Tool, instead of the option ingame.

    I have better results setting the SS ingame to 0.7, and SS OculusTrayTool to 1.7 (with a i5 4690K and a GTX980).

    Then I deactivate the AA, and lower the shadows.
    Shadows to the lowest makes the game smoother, but no shadows inside the cockpit is awful for me. So I let it "high"

    Post processing : I set it in "High", but I don't know if it really affects the fps ?

    I set textures, foliage to low, since we don't see any difference in VR.

    Motion blur to OFF.
    Sharpening to OFF (0%). I don't see any difference when it's 300%, and I think it must eat some fps.

    Resolution to the lowest (1024x768) : it affects only the game mirroring on the monitor, I don't need it, so the lowest is better.

    Mirror : to the lowest

    Numer of opponents : 20
    but it still harsh on races.
    I'll try 10, or maybe lower the SS in oculus tray tool...

    The thing is though, these are early access issues. Any effort and changes you make now may become redundant when the next release comes out.

    I got the chance to try VR at the weekend and while it's not great, has issues, it's early access, I kind of expected that.

    I'm probably lucky in one way that I can't play ACC all the time, I have to set up my rig for a weekend then pack it away before Monday. So I have no time to get into the details.

    Unfortunate that we can't properly run ACC in VR at 90 FPS at the moment. Thanks, mikendrix, for your suggestions! Will try out some of these later, there's definitely things that I'd rather disable such as bloom, motion blur and lens flare. Hopefully, we'll see better "default" performance in future releases.

    Really weird how people are having such wildly different experience with VR. I have a medium powerful system, i7 with a 1070, and it runs pretty ok on my system. I held my cell phone up to the headset to give an idea of what it looks like and even the crappy cell phone video looks pretty decent (once the camera focused properly). Certainly not choppy or unacceptable or a game-stopper on my end.

    looks great, thanks. may invest in an oddysey+ in the future after I upgrade my cpu. How many visible AI you run with?

    I can only recommend the Rift, some of the other brands may have slightly higher resolution numbers but Oculus provides a much better all around experience IMO, it has a wonderful ecosystem of games and the huge financial backing of Facebook. I think I currently have it set to 15 visible opponents but that's just a random number I selected, haven't done enough testing to determine if I can run more or need to run less.

    Not having the same experience. With a GTX 1080, the frame rate is fine at med-high settings. Fairly decent 90 fps in good conditions with a some stuttering at race starts and around late twilight hours. When raising the pixel density and settings to High, I can get a stable 45 fps with ATW locked. With ATW locked at 45 fps, everything looks fine. I usually shoot for 90 fps, but certain titles, like R3E, look the same either way, so I go ahead and take advantage of that and push the graphics settings higher.

    Probably not. I locked it into 45fps ASW to make sure it stayed stable, I'd rather have it in ASW the whole time than having the frame rate fluctuate all the time. It runs fine at 45fps and I don't notice any anomalies from it so I'm good with it. If things stay as they are I think a lot of us may have to give up on the 90fps target but that's not a big deal IMO.

    my 1st impression no mouse support is this set up for console because its not set up for PC ?
    is it a game or a sim ?
    PLS implement mouse support
    my only real problem with ACC so far.

    My first impression is very positive.

    You can bypass the scenes by just clicking your action button including the intro video.
    The menu can be controlled with a mouse but not in VR which makes a lot of sense to me.
    Who is using VR and ACC will have a wheel and wheels have buttons and/or sticks.

    Graphics are just amazing for a beta version and with some tweaks found on this forum there is no more stuttering.
    I have the impression that mostly Rift owners have complaints but I might be wrong.

    This game is going to be a game changer in the racing sim arena.

    Agree, runs relatively fine, though wish we could eventually run it optimized at 90.

    I haven't settled on anything yet, still only played a few hours and still tinkering with settings. I think I had most of the graphics options at Mid, resolution scale around 150, and the engine.ini modifiers found here and at racedepartment. It doesn't look as good as my other games yet but it's not terrible and runs smoothly even with AI and rain (maybe a couple small stutters in the rain at the start of a race).

    It was a replay. :D Only raced them a couple times so far but the AI do seem pretty good, had some good battles with them.

    Is it possible to move the HUD items up into the view straight ahead in VR?
    I can't see my ratings or laptimes... :(

    I had that issue too, because of my limited time I just overlooked it. There are ways of moving them around forward, back, big small, it shows up on the loading screen for me. Although, the shortcuts didn't do what they said they'd do. It was moving my driving position instead of the hud.

    Overall we have to bare in mind this is just VR turned on, it's not working properly yet and it may take waiting until the next update to achieve what your trying to achieve.
