Might seem an odd question but I’ve not done a stint or race longer than 20 mins yet so can’t say I’ve noticed any degradation in tyres.

Before I go for a long session to try and experience the impact of wearing tyres I thought I’d better check first!

It is a thing. Maybe you have turned it off. Check the Realism settings, there is an option for Tyre/Fuel consumption on or off.

Right, forgot about that. Tyre wear is turned off in all realism settings, so you have to enable it manually there for singleplayer. In the special events, depending on which one, tyre wear will be turned on automatically, e.g. it will be on in the hotstint event, but off in the hotlap event.

You can check the tread depth on the setup screen.

Also in hotlap mode tyres get reset at the start of each new lap so pointless to test it in this mode no matter how many laps you do.
