Generic Weekly Hotlap Challenge #143 - Ur favourite?

Discussion in 'Console Lounge' started by Totall Wrytoff, Aug 25, 2019.

  1. Welcome to the thread for the Weekly Hotlap Challenge#143 - Ur favourite?

    The Challenge: Hotlap
Car: Audi Sport Quattro Step 1
    Track: Brands Hatch GP Circuit
Finally, the Audi Quattro runs in the WHC! The car is a trailblazing colossus and in its time left everything else behind, so deserves one of our favourite tracks, the GP Circuit at Brands Hatch.
The Audi Quattro is coming up to its 40th birthday, it was first shown by Audi in March 1980. The idea for a high-performance four-wheel-drive car was proposed in 1977 by Audi's chassis engineer, genius Jörg Bensinger, when he saw that VW’s version of a jeep could outperform any other vehicle in snow, no matter how powerful.
It is not clear whether Audi developed the car specifically for the WRC, but the year the Quattro was launched, the rules had been relaxed to allow four wheel drive. The Quattro, between 1982 and 1985 came 1st, 2nd, 1st, 2nd respectively, driven by legends including Walter Rohl, Hannu Mikkola, Michèle Mouton and Stig Blomqvist.

The Quattro in the game seems to provoke some strong opinion:
On the forum @Bibbles made a post in 2016 saying: “The Audi Quattro turbo is nothing like its real life counterpart, in fact ingame its awful no brakes no grip massive body roll. Ive owned this car IRL and done track days in it at both Brands hatch and Silverstone and the way its portrayed ingame is a mile off. Now before you slate me remember Im comparing to real life experiences, yes I know you only have my word for that but I don't lie. I live 5mins drive from Brands hatch and have driven a lot of cars around track.” Bibbles was then massively slated by nearly all replies, several asking what an Audi Quattro Turbo is. @Andy-R points out how accurate the performance is on the street tyres.

The Quattro is also known as the Ur-Quattro. "Ur" is German for "primordial", "original", or "first of its kind" and is a prefix, here, meaning "original."
Brands Hatch, down the road from Bibbles, was just an old cycle track in Kent and I think perfect for the Quattro. It’s a tough car to place accurately but it is surprisingly quick and pulls well through the low and mid ranges. The Step 1 offers plenty of scope to adjust the car to your preference. You’re aiming for a time in the low one min forties. See if we can beat the RSR this week and I hope this turns out to be one of “Ur” favourites. Eek!

Good choice of tyres this week, we’ve got:
    ..Street Vintage, 45psi all round
    ..Street, 37psi all round
    ..Semislicks, 35psi all round

I'm away this week; might be able to sneak a time late on Sunday.

On holiday in tbe South of England. It's a long time since I've been anywhere below Sheffield; I'd forgotten how picturesque it can be down here.

I've also never felt like such a stranger in my own country. Two nations under one crown, divided more and more.

At least there are no borders in Assetto Corsa.

Games without frontiers on the WHL.

Made a lot of setup changes, mainly ride height, camber, toe, and damper stiffening.
Seems the top time on RSR is 1:40.271.

Went out first on default, tyres were about to explode, OK so the default psi is WAY over for SM tyres, after correcting that went back out and 3 quick laps getting the feel for the thing, going to take some getting used to! Setup will need some work too.

thank you @F1415182235 - tried some of your setup settings, especially the "bump thing" <-- thats a mistery for me until today - much better to handle! :)
but with tyre wear there are only two laps with 100% - so its a real challenge!

Much smaller telly on hols and I'm now having to share AC and the rig with my teenage nephew. He is going to post a time by mid-week.
@F1415182235 set-up is great, I've increased front left by 1psi, seems to hold on for longer, but the tyres are only good for one lap.
Edit - posted simultaneously with @sissydriver, clearly kinder on the tyres than me:)

My very first lap was an amazing 1:37.x, despite multiple mistakes and generally lousy lines. At that point I suspected that something wasn't quite right, and yeah it turns out that there are two Quattros in the list :D
Once I got into the correct car, I loved the noise and hated the understeer. Tried everything I could think of to loosen up the rear end, without ever feeling like I really succeeded.
However it's probably more about line than setup, because my best time had the rear end set up with sensible pressure and camber, and a previous best (only a few tenths slower) had the pressures maxed out and max positive camber on the rears.
I have always struggled with the lines at this track - not sure why, but maybe it's the fast blind corners, weird camber and/or elevation changes. More than any other track I've driven, this one drives me nuts, and I usually really suck here. So for now I'm gonna bask in a warm feeling that I've finally set a decent lap! :)
(I will of course have to unsubscribe from the thread :p)

Did this last might and thanks again F1415182235 for the setup and great lap. Tried a bit Sunday night but didn't feel the car as well. I've changed a few things for my liking like more toe at the back and less at the front.. for the moment. As it been said I think the lines are the problem. More toe at the back and the car grip more the corner but less toe makes it more lively at the rear when you accelerate and helps rotate dame you understeer. A compromise they say.
