Generic Weekly Hotlap Challenge 163 – The whining baby’s first step

Discussion in 'Console Lounge' started by Totall Wrytoff, Jan 25, 2020.

  1. Welcome to the thread for the Weekly Hotlap Challenge 163 – The Whining baby’s first step

    Challenge
    Hotlap:
Car: Lotus Elise SC Step 1
    Track: Highlands Drift
    upload_2020-1-25_18-2-43.png
    upload_2020-1-25_18-2-49.png
After last week’s psychological torture at the hands of a flexing chassis, massive rearward weight bias and a turbo that comes in like an angry viper’s strike, we are in the calm of the Highlands, with a gentle little baby.
The most surprising thing is we’ve never used a Lotus Elise in one hundred and sixty-two WHCs. There are three to choose from: a standard SC and SC Steps 1 & 2.
In the interests of a perfect WHC, I drove them all around the Highlands Drift Circuit and for some reason, the Step 1 felt the most fun and I was a second faster in it than the Step2. As you know, almost anything is fun compared to trying to get a clean lap of the Yellowbird. According to the Assetto Corsa Car Database, the Step 1 has “adjustable Lotus-track-option, coilover dampers and springs. In fact you can clearly feel this compared to the standard car.
So why haven’t we used the Lotus Elise? Is Lotus the most unpopular marque in WHC? They sound horrible. I don’t think the sound is right. I’ve driven an Elise, the 135R (admittedly with the roof off) and I don’t remember it sounding like a baby with a dirty nappy. I do remember thinking Lotus was utterly mad to think anyone would want to pay £30k for something as basic and crappy as this!
The Elise is powered by the Toyota 1.7L 4cyl, DOHC 2ZZ-GE engine, which was designed by Yamaha. The engine features Yamaha’s (or Toyota’s) version of Honda’s VTECH, in that it uses a dual camshaft profile system (above a certain RPM the cams switch profile allowing more fuel and air) to produce the added power without an increase in displacement or forced induction. Having said that SC stands for Supercharger!
Lotus fitted the Magnusson M45 Roots (niiiice) supercharger the the 2ZZ, specifically because it has no need for an inter-cooler and all the associated pipework, so it fits neatly into the Elise’s engine bay.

We last used the very excellent Highlands Drift Track for WHC 123. It feels very satisfying to hook up the corners in the Elise. Turn-in is ace and it has enough power to give decent shove, but also the satisfaction of needing to maintain momentum and carve an accurate line. Ignore the whingey whining and focus on using as little brakes as possible and exploiting the grip for max cornering speed. Feel the proverbial “rails!”
Here's a track map I've made for you, the exit of turn 5 up the hill to Tower Lub, (when you get it just right,) is my favourite corner.

RSR times…? Reckon I pipped this time testing the combi….
It seems eXistenZ’s time has been removed from this combi too! In fact, the Lotus Elise SC Step 1 around Highlands Drift has had only one entry. Possibly. Anyway, this is a fresh combi and safe to say, WHC 163ers will blow this time into the heather.

Street or Semislick tyres available, recommended pressures are:
    ….Street Tyres - Front 32 psi / Rear 34 psi
    ….Semislicks - Front 29 psi / Rear 31 psi

Ya know, I really dont identify with my username. I now think it is a funny, humorous outlook on racing. It honestly was what I thought of myself prior to sobriety. I wanted to change my username when I switched to PC. As you can see I do not use it as my username for PC version. I just thought it would be less confusion for this hotlap community to keep it. I also believe taking the relatively recent path of complete sobriety has calmed my ego greatly. I now do not have nearly as many outlandish, unproven, fairy-tail type of thoughts like I once did in my past. I've been humbled many, many, many times competing in this friendly competition. I will continue to be humbled on my journey through "racing" whether it is sim, real life, or even trackdays, etc. I am forever committed to being a student and learning. Sorry for the rant!

Was running yesterday, feels good. Some FFB and graphic tweaks to do but all seems good.

I had to open up the PC last night because my son dropped off a 1TB SSD. Unfortunetly I need a serial cable to make it work. So for the short time it's down until then.
