Generic Weekly Hotlap Challenge 164 – Learning Curves

2:00.xxx is a ridiculous lap. I have tried all week to better my 2:01.099 and have failed miserably. How the top 3 cracked into the 2:00's is beyond me. I've tried so many different things and nothing has worked. I've tried keeping up with my ghost and even failed at that thus far. Hopefully when I get home today I can do something worthy lol since I last improved to this point I've only been able to repeat 2:01.5xx's. New job does have me learning A LOT though so I'll blame it on my mental fatigue compiling throughout the week haha

 

Do you have the 8hp70 trans?? That's amazing little loophole you found. I used to use Sentra spec V parts on my altima back in the day since they both had a qr25de engine and the same transmission casing/clutch assembly (difference being gear ratios and limited slip, which over time I ended up buying a used spec v trans with lsd so I had a semi-spec v altima..was the only one on the internet with that setup).

 

I bought this 2011 car "new" in 2013, it was a Chrysler show car, 300 kms. I followed it on the internet for two years. My wife and I sat in it at the Toronto International car show in 2010 and again at the Ottawa show a year later. It was loaded with everything Chrysler/Mercedes had to offer at the time. The car was put up for sale in 2013 when the body style changed and the Mercedes part co-op was over.
I can't recall the tranny numbers but the rear rear end is a Getrag 5 speed.
I was told Getrag translates to German 1st generation transmission, blah, blah, blah. Whatever. It gets the job done and is highly modifiable.

If you were willing to post a vid of your best laptime we might be able to point out a few things to help you improve. But I'll admit even I have no idea how those guys are so fast lol. I admit that I am pretty quick in street cars but in cars with high downforce I'm always 2 seconds off pace. I think setup is very important in those types of cars. I also think it takes a different set of skills to be fast in downforce cars than street cars. I just think of myself as a specialist now instead of an alien lol.

 

I hate Schnapps, It just rhymed better. I'm strictly a Whiskey man. Jack Daniels' and anything made in Alberta.

Here's my 2.03.1 lap from a chase view

Although wide of the apex at Loop, I held 3rd gear and was faster. Gains to be had with a tighter line here.
I was late on my downchange through copse.
I held 5th through Becketts and carried more speed than usual, the same at Stowe. Gained time at both.

As a great man (my grandfather) once said, "better to be last with the best then first against the worst". He is also the fellow who told me to remount my first motorcycle after I drove it into the neighbours garden!
I miss that guy!

 

So truth be told I hardly ever post my laps because I'm never recording with geforce experience. I also have not figured out if their is a way to extract a saved lap from assetto corsa saved replay library to view/post without actually being in the sim. I also feel like I never really have impressive enough lap times for me to feel its worthy of recording/saving. I should stop thinking with that mindset and utilize the replay as play back to improve. Just as I would review trackday footage to improve. Dont know why I dont implement the same mindset/strategy when I'm hot lapping. Guess I'll try to change that from now on!

I spent 2 hours trying to improve. The level of perfection and timing required is very difficult to obtain. I lost count how many times I was ahead of my ghost going into copse. I'd either get caught or passed on the way to maggotts and becketts. If I remained ahead after them I would be passed at Stowe pretty much every time! Beyond frustrating. Only once was I ahead by a considerable margin going to copse..enough of a gap to contend for podium but I just COULD NOT FINISH AHEAD. Guess I'll look towards the next challenge now.

 

@gamma500 - I was a JD and whiskey man before all these meds.Just a sip these days makes me feel so sick

@DriverModFTW - “Nooooooooo!” Nudged off the podium on Sunday! For the upteenth time! There’s still a chance…(only need 3/10ths, that’s nothing!) Surprise yourself!
Totall Wrytoff staggers up to 5th and good improvement by @365gt , which keeps him in 7th!
The big update news is @Chaos_Chris . A massive two seconds (nearly) of improvement and for the first time, as far as I can recall, he’s ahead of his rival @Laughing Gravy with clear daylight. At the moment. Congratulations are deserved!

A calm, controlled, Sunday lap and it can all change in an instant, with just over 5hrs until the flag... can @Lewsixbone find a tenth and a bit? Will @DriverModFTW buckle up and go again? Is @Chaos_Chris safe, or will someone else have the last laugh...?

Ok I'll try to analyze your lap but I gotta say that view doesn't make it easy. I think a cockpit view would be more helpful for analyzing. First, it looks like your a little late with turn in on Abby, or maybe you just didn't turn the wheel hard enough, which causes you to drift out to the far curb. Gotta straighten out those S bends.
I start braking for the loop where the astro turf becomes light green painted asphalt on left side of the track. That should get you slowed down enough to hit the apex. You want to be on the gas asap because its a long run to the next corner. I'm not sure why holding 3rd gear was faster for you there because when I hold a gear higher than normal I tend to understeer toward the curb and run off the track if I don't lift the throttle a bit - which means a slower top speed and that then kills any time gained by the higher apex speed.

You turn in late at brooklands. I think its because your either a little late on the braking point, or because you didn't quite line yourself up straight enough so that you can brake in a straight line while still heading towards the apex. So you couldn't really get on the gas when heading to Luffield.

Luffield looks good just dont be afraid to run close to the curb! Loosing time going round the outside like that.

I use a light stab of the brakes just at the point I turn into Stowe to get the car going towards the apex. Use the engine braking from downshifting and then get back on the gas asap.

Gotta straighten out the line between Maggots and Becketts. But your exit line out of becketts looks pretty good to me. Just sounded like you may have been in a gear too high.

Same with Stowe.


Can you describe some of the handling issues your having with the car? Understeer before, during, or after apex? Oversteer before, during or after apex? Maybe we can suggest tuning ideas to help eliminate any issues?

If I had to guess you get oversteer on corner exit which is why you hold the higher gear to minimize it. If that's true, try increasing the toe on the front and back by a bit. Also increase neg camber a bit. Maybe add 1 click on wing on the back? Soften the arb?

Walked away from this event yesterday but just couldn't stay away with so much left on the table.
Hope to make another modest gain before flag drop but wanted to get this posted in case I get distracted and miss the deadline.
By the way, GMT, what the hell is that! A city of 280,000 has their own time zone?
