Generic Weekly Hotlap Challenge 179 – Praga Seca

Discussion in 'Console Lounge' started by Totall Wrytoff, May 16, 2020.

  1. Welcome to the thread for the Weekly Hotlap Challenge 179 – Praga Seca.

Sounds like an exciting cocktail that could send you into a spin?
    You could be right.

    Car: Praga R1
    Track: Laguna Seca
The Praga R1 is a sportscar produced by Czech car manufacturer Praga Racing for the “Supercar Challenge Superlights PR1” Category in 2013. This series featured the Praga, Radicals SR3 and SR8, the Caterham SP300 and other Group CN cars. These were built by race chassis companies, interestingly for us, like Tatuus, who supplied the Tatuus PY012, with an open cockpit and tiny wheels. Have a look at it!
The epically named Danny van Dongen was the official Praga test driver. He drove the R1 for the first time on October 10, 2012 and production began in March 2013. Seems like a bit of a gap, a few issues perhaps?

The first Superlight race was at the Slovakia Ring and controversial. Praga Racing announced that they would enter ten R1's. Hilariously, due to a strike by Spanish customs, most of the wheels didn’t arrive, so just three Pragas started. The wonderfully denominated D. v. Dongen wasn’t left in the pits it seems. In the factory team’s first outing, the superbly titled Danny van Dongen was fastest in free practice, and took their first pole. In the end he only finished fourth and that magnificent appellation didn’t make it into the lights. Stefan Rosina, in another factory Praga won the race.

I have to say, I’d not heard of Praga before AC, but I’ve always fancied a Radical. These cars look as though they would monster anything on a track day. And they would. Utterly slack free, the lack of weight means ripping straight line pace and there’s downforce boosted grip to sling you round corners. These attributes also mean the car clearly exposes every inaccurate input.
Having got excited, although it does have a super light Carbon fibre monocoque and a very racey Hewland JFR six-speed sequential semi-automatic transaxle gearbox, on board they don’t feel as fast as they look. The reason is down to the very modest two litre, inline four pot made by Renault and found in almost every French car from 1983 to 2001. Today you can still find it in a Dacia! It is blown, AC quotes 210 bhp, WikiP says around 335-390PS. It’s only pushing 600Kgs, but there’s not the grunt you expect.
With that though, comes the need to more carefully nurture your momentum through the corners. Here the downforce allows you to go faster than you expect at first and it takes some getting used to.

Up until a couple of weeks ago the RSR best was 1.24.165s, but once again (in fact, in every way) GG.e seems to be ahead of me, and has since gone a full 6/10ths faster and posted a 1:23.514, albeit probably at a near frosty temperature. A sub 1:26 gets you into the top 30 and would be very respectable.

Tyres are Dunlops, 200/580 R15s on the front and 265/605 R16s across the rear, with an ideal operating pressure of 28psi at both ends.

Get out there and give it some Dongen!

☆☆PLEASE NOTE: the excellent WHC178 IS STILL OPEN UNTIL 18:00 (GMT+1) TOMORROW. ☆☆

    How to take part:

  3. This is a strange one.

I've just done a test using this week's WHC and two different profiles on PS4.

I logged in using one of my new profiles (created because AC had stopped saving my set-ups) and did 7 laps with stock settings
Result - 1:27.478 - car felt good to drive, trans a bit long perhaps

I then logged in as Totall Wrytoff, with exact same settings (and a few laps the wiser)
Result - 1:28.428 - car felt heavy and nasty, spun several times, car was truculent and very slow to respond, tough to go faster

    1. I'm a second faster with less effort, using a different profile.
    2. Different profiles yield different times in AC.
    3. I have considered setting up a profile called Goodgame!!

    But seriously, all thoughts welcome....

Tell me about your results :p
Sounds strange though. Sure you were running same setup??

    So gave it "another" go.
Noticed my recent time was with ABS on, so had another go and improved a bit. This car is sensible on braking, so taking it slowly and try to brake later step by step. Here is the video, time is 1:23:519 and without ABS:
  5. @GoodGame.eXistenZ

The set-up was completely stock for both cars, although they felt quite different.

The weather, time and track temp were exactly the same. I can be meticulously scientific when I want to be.:)

My faster times were set first. I then logged out and in, went straight to hotlap, and I couldn't get anywhere close to them using my normal profile.
  6. GoodGame.eXistenZ

    GoodGame.eXistenZ Hardcore Simmer

Strange, but I really cannot imagine that same settings and conditions would result in different times only when profile is changed. I would suspect variance here. You could compare top speed differences and sector times to rule out any other chances.

    Look at this!
1st lap to "try out this name" and it's the fastest I've ever done!:D
Still on stock settings which feel quite good except for the transmission, which seems a bit tall for the track, but eggs you on.

I've had that. Sometimes I've used my 2stroke pony profile and the car felt different to mooyryder's.

  11. It is!:D
Wheel rotation is 1080 for both.

I've found the answer - It is track grip.
    (And too much lockdown.)

With my TW profile, with track grip set to optimum, it reads anything between 96-98% track grip.
Switch profile, all settings the same, it reads 100%. That's the reason.

    But why is that?
And it is affecting my mind!

OK so I have raced this car before, but on fixed setup. Had a quick go at default, terribly non-compliant and gears too tall. Beat my PB from back then almost instantly but it was clear that without setup changes it wasn't going to take me much further.

Made a couple of changes and then couldn't make it into T1 without losing the back end; OK back to default, further random clicking and a few more restarts later managed to get precisely +2.000 from the target. RSR says 7 laps total but probably double that if you count the mistake + restarts lol!
Plus at one point I could have sworn my FFB went weird, seemed OK after exit and rejoin. I'm blaming you guys; placebo is a hell of a drug :D

May have another go if I find time but racing 1h Thursday and then in 6H race Saturday and way more practice needed for both!

Much easier car than the old Lotus of last week! I'm still of course comparatively slow, but hopefully there's a little more to come over the course of the week. I may try a new Steam ID to shave a second off if all else fails :D
  18. Hey, hey! Good selection of humorous response!:D

Well, something was odd and I'm a different person now.
    Seems to be working well.

Setup at the end of the vid.

I used bassini's tune from the setup market. I took a couple clicks of wing out of it, increased the braking pressure to 100, and adjusted psi which is optimized for lap 2. I probably also adjusted fuel. I didn't try it without the tc, maybe next time.

@Peggy11 gets into the 26s, which, as stipulated in the intro, is this week's target. Good job, adopting another personality should gain you an easy 1.25.9, based on my experience.

    * I set my time using GoodGame's name and the default set up, just lowered fuel. I've tried to improve the set-up, but each adjustment results in a slower lap. I would think lowering ride height, softer rear ARB and maybe softer front springs would help, so I'm keen to try this. To go with my another personality.

Times this week are looking very racey, good driving, well done everyone.

So how do you guys cope with hitting your limit and overdriving the car?

I pretty much hit mine and due to my eager I get sloppy. I run more off track and make more errors, pirouettes, tasting sand and pushing just too much.

I went over the basics again and again but the only way (imho) is to push a bit less and practice more. I think that in the end it is the only cure :p

I've watched @GoodGame.eXistenZ over and over and I simply can't see myself closing such a gap  It is really impressive

I've seen a couple mentioning a leaderboard. PS4 doesn't have one, or does it?
