AC Night (fake ;) ) is it possible?

I don't want to get into details, but some of the tools and methods used in that video are against what Kunos allows us to do with game data.

 

Well ok...

 

Instead of being so stuck up about what is allowed to show in a video, Kunos could try and come up with an engine iteration that supports more than one light source. Seriously, it's 2016 - dynamic lighting is not a big deal anymore. Doom 3 had full dynamic lighting in 2004 FFS...

 

It is amazing how lightning can effect your emotions when driving in a sim.

Is it important for driving quality? Not really.

Would more people drive because of it? Probably.

I know I keep downloading Pcars because of it, and it is fun.

Then I come back to AC and it feels better than ever.

 

How do you know dynamic lighting or multiple light sources isn't a big deal for sim racing games? The amount of things you need your cpu to do for car simulation is way more than for a FPS where it relies more on your gpu. And then you have AI opponents which will lower your fps compared to single car on track. And I remember Stefano talking about this on a stream that with an FPS your game speed is lower so you can put more objects for the player to see specially since you're playing in a smaller area to render compared to a race track which is more extensive and open visually, and the car is constantly facing different parts of the far world.

 

It's just a trick, aditional lod as shadow and the PP filter reverse the shadows/ligths. So you need to modify the kn5 of the car to reverse the shadows too. Obviouly, must be used with JSGME and "only for mods".

 

But still, the feeling is great

 

This actually doesn't look terrible. Not perfect by any means, but far better than any other attempts we've seen at achieving night lighting for AC. Too bad it's not "Kunos-legal"

 

It's doable from a technical sense sure, but they would be starting from 0 on testing, performance etc. so they may as well just call it a different game. For example if it gets 1/5 of the framerate do they just say you need 5x as good a minimum gpu?

 

Well nice gimmik. Need to give it a try, if I can find instructions of course..

For AC's engine that maybe is a problem, but in Raceroom and Project Cars you can have grids up to 60 or a 100 cars
- which is far more important than night for enduranceraces btw - and animated 3d spectators instead of cardboard folks at the same time.
It isn't cause the genre doesn't allow it other parts of AC are so great, that this isn't possible.
Besides if you want to know whats CPU heavy play ARMA.

Besides the reverse shadow method is an option, it looks OK - AC doesn't look that great anyway if you don't add SSGSAA or whatever to eliminate the bad alaising and extreme flickering of the shadows..
