Start into the vln season

Flugplatz should have way better trackside safe protections. I mean, the name itself assumes cars are going to fly there, so what's the point in having such low and weak barriers no blame on the spectator, hope he finds peace.
Hope they'll make it safer, even if it would have been way better if they would have done it before a death happened

 

this is exactly what is so "hell-ish" about that track. Sometimes it isn't even a human mistake that gets you. Extremely dangerous geometry, very little runoff, non-up-to-date barriers. To some it is intriguing, to some it is the ultimate test of will, to some it is outright insanity, and to some, it is death. I think that is what makes visiting the track an almost otherworldly experience, both as a petrolhead and a racer. May he/she rest in peace.

The name refers to an old airfield for gliders which was near the track some decades ago.

 

That is absolutely horrible, but part of the game, these kind of things only happen once in a while.This is a part of racing that people tend to forget, but it's always there, it only comes up every now and then...fortunately.

 

I kind of agree. Still a hard day for the family of the dead spectator. May he/she rest in peace.
Was thinking about going there, too, this morning, but I decided not to, because of the weather being pretyy cold for riding there on the motorbike. Would have gone to Brünnchen or Pflanzgarten though...

 

In German flugplatz means airfield (flying place apparently???), there used to0 be an old WW2 airfield there irc which gives that part of the track the name.

It doesn't relate to the jump there which was just one of many back in the day.

 

Manfred Winkelhock had a similar crash in an F2 - but without the tragic consequences.

 

Crash happened most likely because of the strong wind currents in spring + also the Nissan GTR GT3 having more power+top speed over the rest of the class, honestly I would've expected a crash like that from the SCG 003, as that car is pretty flat and LMP1 style body-shaped.

I know people are gonna disagree with this, there's noone to blame for the death and the injuries of the spectators, but in the end the spectators were gambling with their lives, sitting on the outside of such a high-speed two sets of corners is a death sentence and someone finally lost the gamble.

 

Was looking forward to that race and drive some AC-Nordschleife this evening for the whole work-week. Don't feel like that anymore.

Yes, taking the facts into account, Flugplatz might be one of the most dangerous places to watch motorsports. And I guess most people there know it. I wanted to go there sometime, and I knew about that.

Edit: Agree with Minolin that this will have severe consequences for VLN, if not motorsports in Germany in general. VLN is possible now, because there isn´t too much security personal required, which will definitifely change. Saw the same thing happening with airshows here, hardly any are remaining these days, it just wasn´t possible anymore for some small airfields to put up with the newest regulations.

 

Sad day. There is nowhere to place blame - as the word accident implies - but as a race spectator, you have to know sitting on the outside of a turn is always a risk, and sitting at the end of Quiddelbacher-Höhe is simply insane. Sure, there's little chance of something going wrong, but when it does, it's generally an airborne car coming over the crest, and it will be catastrophic.

Edit: yes, crashes here are always stated as being at Flugplatz, but it's the hill and crest at Quiddelbacher-Höhe that is generally the root cause of accidents here. Even those of us that have only driven sim versions of Nordschleife know why.

 

Today occured a deadly accident on the Nordschleife. A Nissan Nismo GT3 crashed at Flugplatz during VLN Endurance series. One spectator died...

damn i thought flying cars were a thing of the past with modern downforce, a real shame that happened, imagine the aco are gonna have to change some parts of the track to make it more safe now which normally means chicanes, chicanes everywhere.
